{"id":547,"date":"2013-02-13T14:48:10","date_gmt":"2013-02-13T14:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hum.port.ac.uk\/europeanstudieshub\/?page_id=547"},"modified":"2017-06-14T08:51:38","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T08:51:38","slug":"multi-level-governance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hum.port.ac.uk\/europeanstudieshub\/learning\/module-4-theorising-the-european-union\/multi-level-governance\/","title":{"rendered":"Multi-level governance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unlike other approaches that try to compare the EU to other entities or pre-existing models (federalism for example), multi-level governance (MLG) assumes that the EU is <em>sui generis<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/em>(unique).<\/p>\n<p>Theorists who advance MLG present a multi-layered view of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>For them, EU member states are an important, perhaps the most important, part of the European polity, but they are not the only influential actors. Others, including supranational organisations and sub-national actors, also play a significant role operating at different \u2018levels\u2019, all impacting on EU developments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3214\" src=\"http:\/\/hum.port.ac.uk\/europeanstudieshub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mlg_diagram-01.jpg\" alt=\"mlg_diagram-01\" width=\"613\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hum.port.ac.uk\/europeanstudieshub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mlg_diagram-01.jpg 613w, https:\/\/hum.port.ac.uk\/europeanstudieshub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mlg_diagram-01-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, MLG has been criticised for its lack of explanatory ability.
