Assessing the prize-winner 6 months on from the Nobel Peace award:
a bad joke or richly deserved accolade in times of crisis?
Abstract of essay winning the 1st prize
by Franziska Feja, undergraduate student European Studies and International Relations.
The European Union certainly deserves the Nobel Peace Prize regarding its contribution to world peace. Not only a long-standing peace between former hostile nations, lasting freedom, justice and democracy but also a political system that brings people together across their national borders in a supranational community has been established. Moreover, the EU as a global actor plays a significant role in peacekeeping and promoting human rights worldwide.
Criticism, however, has mainly arisen concerning the Union’s present challenges. High levels of unemployment and harsh austerity measures have caused serious social tensions in some member states and popular support for the EU is falling. Nevertheless, the award should rather be seen as a motivator in times of crisis and a reminder of the achievements of the European Union.
